Homemade Okonomiyaki, Take One

I (or we) will expand this placeholder post later, but I wanted to make a quick comment about this fact that we made okonomiyaki ourselves at home for the first time last night.

Thanks to a very nice and detailed blog post on Just Hungry, and to a transcribed recipe that friends sent us after we sample their homemade okonomiyaki, we had a pretty easy time of it.  The Just Hungry post really helped when we went to “Ninja Market” to buy ingredients.  We followed Lynnea’s recipe but using aonori (not just “nori”), per Just Hungry.  We added tako (octopus) and ebi (shrimp) to ours.

Homemade Caramels with De-La Ranch Bacon

Seems like a fitting first post. Having done the IT work to get this blog running, we both failed to actually start writing. Fortunately, we have lots of stuff we’ve done in the past we can start with.

A few months ago, prompted by Jessica and a blog we’d read (I thought it was Ruhlman’s blog, but now I can’t find the post so maybe not?): caramels with bacon! There’s no further twist to it. Just a bunch of very good bacon, cooked until fairly crispy, and a standard caramel recipe. Must mention our bacon supplier however. We got this bacon from Da-Le Ranch, who are regular vendors at our neighborhood farmers market, the Little Italy Mercado. Thick-cut, locally raised and smoked bacon. Holy crap!

I was going to post the recipe, but I can’t find the original source online. Anyone?
